Baccarat crystal is a type of fine glassware that originated in France in the 18th century. It is renowned for its exquisite craftsmanship, elegant design, and brilliant clarity. Baccarat crystal has been used by royalty, celebrities, and connoisseurs around the world, and has become a symbol of luxury and refinement. In this blog post, we will explore the history of baccarat crystal, from its humble beginnings to its present-day achievements.
The Origins of Baccarat Crystal
The first glassworks in Baccarat was established in 1764 by the Bishop of Metz, who wanted to promote industry and compete with the imported Bohemian glass12. The glassworks produced window panes, mirrors, and tableware, using soda glass, a type of glass that contains sodium carbonate and lime. Soda glass was cheaper and easier to produce than lead crystal, which required potash and lead oxide, but it was also less clear and less durable.
In 1816, the glassworks was acquired by Aime-Gabriel D’Artigues, a former owner of a crystal factory in Vonêche, Belgium13. D’Artigues wanted to transfer his crystal production to France, as he faced high import taxes and political instability in Belgium. He obtained a license from King Louis XVIII to produce lead crystal in Baccarat, and thus began the transformation of the glassworks into a crystal manufacturer.
D’Artigues introduced the English technique of making lead crystal, which involved adding lead oxide to the molten glass to increase its refractive index and density. Lead crystal was more transparent, more sparkling, and more resistant to scratches and cracks than soda glass. It also allowed for more intricate shapes and cuts, as it was softer and more malleable. D’Artigues hired skilled workers from Vonêche and other regions to train the local craftsmen in the art of crystal making. He also invested in new equipment and facilities, such as furnaces, molds, and polishing machines.
The Rise of Baccarat Crystal
In 1823, D’Artigues sold the crystal factory to three wealthy partners, who formed the Compagnie des Cristalleries de Baccarat14. The company continued to expand and innovate, creating new products and designs that appealed to a growing clientele. Baccarat crystal won its first gold medal at the Paris Exhibition of 1823, and subsequently received many more awards and honors at various national and international exhibitions. Baccarat crystal also attracted the attention and patronage of the French nobility and aristocracy, as well as foreign royalty and dignitaries. Some of the most notable commissions and orders that Baccarat crystal received include:
- In 1827, King Charles X of France ordered a set of 36 crystal glasses, each engraved with his monogram and crown, for his coronation banquet45.
- In 1839, King Louis-Philippe of France ordered a set of 200 crystal glasses, each bearing the royal coat of arms, for the Château de Versailles45.
- In 1841, Emperor Nicholas I of Russia ordered a set of 2,400 crystal pieces, including glasses, decanters, vases, and candelabras, for the Kremlin Palace45.
- In 1855, Emperor Napoleon III of France ordered a set of 3,000 crystal pieces, including a monumental chandelier, for the Tuileries Palace45.
- In 1867, Sultan Abdulaziz of the Ottoman Empire ordered a set of 4,000 crystal pieces, including a large chandelier, for the Dolmabahçe Palace45.
Baccarat crystal also became popular among the wealthy and fashionable classes of Europe and America, who admired its elegance and quality. Baccarat crystal was used to decorate the homes and tables of celebrities, such as the actress Sarah Bernhardt, the writer Marcel Proust, and the designer Coco Chanel45. Baccarat crystal was also exported to various countries, such as India, China, Japan, and Brazil, where it was appreciated for its exotic and refined style.
